It’s March. Still feels a little “wintery.” Why should your worry about AC in your car? Here’s why – almost all cars on the road today use the AC to make the defroster work. When you set the knob on the dash to defrost, the AC compressor engages. Why? AC dries the air in the interior of the car. All of that damp air that fogs up the windows condenses in the AC system and drips out of the bottom of the car. If your AC is not working, turning on the heat just makes more steam in there on a rainy day, so you can take along some Kleenexes (Kleenices?) to wipe down the windshield, or you can get it fixed. We can fix it. Don’t wait for one of those wet, gloomy days. Don’t wait for the first really warm day. Try your AC now and, if it doesn’t blow cold, come see us.

Today’s automobiles are loaded with computers that control the engine, the transmission, vehicle stability, body functions such as AC, lighting, you name it. Vehicle manufacturers are constantly publishing updates for the software in these computers to correct problems that became apparent after new vehicles have been in service for a while. We just finished updating the engine control software in a 2008 Honda Accord to correct a problem with throttle response. Some Mazdas turn on the check engine light – not because there’s an engine problem – but because some test tolerances are set too tight in the engine computer. Does your car need to have its software updated? The only way we can tell is to get our hands on the car and use our specialized equipment to read the current software version in the computer. Next time you’re in for service tell our Service Advisor you want to find out.

You might remember “The Quarter Heist” in which some local creeps stole our jug of quarters that was the basis of a contest and was planned to go to charity. The quarters were gone, but we decided to give the money to charity anyway. The local news carried the story of the theft and the story apparently went nationwide, because our accountants in Baltimore saw the story on their local news. They called to tell us about it and sent a donation that more than matched the original $250 lost in the heist. Soon after, our business coaches who are also in Baltimore sent a similar donation! In addition, a number of our customers, on seeing the news piece, came in and made cash donations to help out.

We tossed around a lot of organizations as possible recipients, but a good friend of ours, Max King, told us about the good works being done by Toby’s Dream, a local foundation similar to Make a Wish. Thanks to many folks’ kindness and generosity we were able to give Toby’s Dream a check for $760! Here’s Carole presenting the check to Joan Steele, Executive Director of Toby’s Dream.

If you would like to support a good, locally run cause, you can contact Joan Steele at joan@tobysdream.org. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Paar, Melis and ATI and all who gave and turned a bad experience into a great one.

When you call or visit most independent auto repair facilities, you can expect to talk to a grumpy old man, or a busy mechanic with grease up to his elbows, or a “Service Advisor” who is a former mechanic who got tired of having grease up to his elbows. At First Landing Autocare you’re more likely to encounter one of the many attractive, intelligent women who make up a large part of our staff. They are our face to the public, serving as cashiers, service advisors, and administrators. They take care of the myriad details involved in providing superior service to our customers, and beyond all that, they’re fun. They all have a sense of humor making coming to work at our place very enjoyable, and they put up with the grumpy old men.

If you walk a block behind our shop at Shore Drive Shell, you’re on the beach. Walk a mile to the east from there and you’ll be very close to the spot where John Smith and his followers first set foot on dry land after what must have been a harrowing trip across the Atlantic. No matter how long you had been at sea, it must have been scary to face a land composed of sand dunes, beach grass and wind-bent trees. Maps that were produced later refer to this area as “the desert.” So, like the nearby state park, we adopted the name First Landing to honor the courage of those first settlers.

Today, the desert has, of course, been tamed. A walk through the state park will give you an inkling of the daunting real estate that Smith and his team faced, but something is missing – sand. Lots and lots of sand. Cape Henry used to be home to huge dunes that I’m told rivaled Kitty Hawk and that sand was viewed as a resource to be exploited, so a train track was built on what is now the bike path and the sand was carted away. When the sand was depleted in one spot, bulldozers would push the track to the next spot and load more sand. A gentleman who worked the project in his youth quipped that the sand was” spread between here and Ohio a quarter of an inch thick.”

Life was tough for those “first landers,” but they persisted and settled Virginia. We are proud to commemorate their struggle and their courage.

Timing belts, that is. Lots of cars use timing belts and, given enough time, they break. So what happens when the belt breaks? Well, it depends on which engine you have. There are two types of engines – interference and non-interference. But I’m getting ahead of myself…

The timing belt controls the interaction between dozens of parts in the engine. The engine is spinning at thousands of revolutions per minute and the timing belt makes the valves open and close at the right time to get air and fuel in and exhaust out. On a non-interference engine, when these operations are interrupted by a broken timing belt, the car just stops. inconvenient, but not tragic. When the belt breaks on an interference engine, you might wnat to duck! Metal hits metal as intake and exhaust valves strike pistons, with less than desirable results. We’re talking new engine here.

Manufacturers recommend timing belt change intervals of 60-120,000 miles. We can tell you exactly what your car’s manufacturer recommends. Time also takes a toll on timing belts. Most manufacturers say max ten years on the belt. So even if you don’t drive a lot, you might need a new belt.

Right now, Jason is working on a Mitsubishi that went 130,000 miles before the belt wore out and left the owner stranded. Looks like the engine will be okay, but why take the chance? We install the highest quality components and guarantee the job for 12 months/12,000 miles – and you keep on driving! Call Chris or Stephanie now and find out if it’s time for a new belt.
